Vignette (Autobahnvignette) for travelers in Switzerland

Every motorway and national road in Switzerland — signposted in green and white — is paid with a vignette. Since 2023 it also exists in digital form, linked to your license plate, so there is no sticker to collect and nothing to display in the windscreen. Switzerland only sells an annual vignette, valid from 1 December until 31 January of the following year, and every vehicle needs its own — including trailers. Toll roads in Switzerland

In Switzerland every motorway and national road is subject to a toll and therefore requires a vignette. These roads are signposted in green and white. A handful of Alpine tunnels and passes are charged separately on top of the vignette, among them the Great St. Bernard tunnel, the Munt la Schera tunnel and the car-train services through the Lötschberg, Furka, Simplon and Vereina tunnels.

Ordinary cantonal and local roads are free of charge, so a vignette is only needed once you join the motorway network.

Regulations for vehicles under 3.5 t

Cars, camper vans, minibuses, motorcycles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes laden weight all pay the toll with a vignette. Each vehicle needs its own vignette — a car towing a caravan or a trailer therefore needs two, one for the towing vehicle and one for the trailer.

Since 1 August 2023 the vignette is also available in digital form. The e-vignette is linked to your license plate, so there is nothing to collect and nothing to stick on the windscreen, and it costs exactly the same as the adhesive version.

Prices and validity periods

Switzerland only sells an annual vignette — there is no day, weekly or monthly option. It is valid for 14 months: from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year. A vignette bought for the current toll year can therefore still be used on 1 January of the next year.

The Swiss price is fixed by the federal authorities and is identical for cars, motorcycles and trailers. All prices in this checkout are shown in your own currency, converted at the current rate, and include our service fee.

Toll regulations over 3.5 t

Vehicles above 3.5 tonnes are not covered by the vignette. Lorries pay the performance-related heavy vehicle charge (PSVA), calculated from the weight, the emission class and the distance driven in Switzerland. Camper vans, coaches and other heavy vehicles that do not transport goods can instead use the lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PVA), bought per day, per month or per year at the border.

Sales points

The adhesive vignette is sold at customs offices at the border, at petrol stations, post offices and cantonal road traffic offices. The e-vignette can be ordered online before you leave, which registers your plate in advance, saves you the queue at the border and gives you a proper e-mail receipt and invoice within minutes of paying.

Fines

Compliance is checked at the border and by roadside patrols anywhere on the motorway network. Driving without a valid vignette means a fine of 200 CHF plus the price of the vignette, which has to be bought on the spot. The same fine applies to an adhesive vignette that has not been properly stuck to the windscreen.

Transfers, plate changes and start date

A vignette is tied to one vehicle and cannot be transferred to another. An adhesive vignette that has been removed becomes invalid, and the e-vignette stays linked to the license plate it was bought for.

The registration number cannot be changed once the vignette has been issued, and the start of validity cannot be postponed — the annual vignette always runs over the fixed Swiss toll period. Proper application of an adhesive vignette

If you use the sticker instead of the digital version, it must be applied to the inside of a clean, dry windscreen without any additional aids such as tape or foil:

Cars: on the inside of the windscreen, behind the rear-view mirror or in a lower corner.
Motorcycles: on a non-removable part of the machine that is easy to see.
Trailers: on the left side, on a non-removable part of the body.
The vignette must adhere by its own glue only — it may never be fixed with tape or held behind glass.
A damaged or removed vignette is invalid and has to be replaced.

Who is exempt

Emergency and military vehicles, and vehicles with a valid Swiss exemption, do not need a vignette. Everyone else — including foreign-registered vehicles simply transiting the country — does, from the moment they use a motorway or national road.
