E-vignettes (rovinieta) for travelers in Romania

Road use in Romania is paid with a digital vignette. It is tied to your license plate, and can be bought from 1 day up to 12 months, also linked to the vehicle identification number (VIN), so there is no sticker to collect and nothing to display in the windscreen. Pick the class that matches your vehicle below; the price and the available validity periods change with the weight, axle count and number of seats. Confirmation is instant and your order is completed within 2 minutes.

Where the Romanian vignette applies

In Romania a valid road vignette (rovinieta) is required for every motor vehicle using the national road and motorway network. Motorcycles are the single exception. The obligation covers all national roads and motorways, except the stretches that run inside a town or city between the entry and exit signs. Trailers are not charged separately behind a passenger car, while lorries and buses are always rated in their own, higher class.

Bridges with a separate toll

Four crossings are charged on top of the vignette and are paid per passage:

  • Danube bridge Ruse (Bulgaria) to Giurgiu (Romania)
  • Danube bridge II Vidin (Bulgaria) to Calafat (Romania)
  • Cernavodă to Fetești bridge on the A2 towards the Black Sea coast
  • Giurgeni to Vadu Oii bridge over the Danube

Bridge passages can be bought as single trips or as multi-trip packages, and the rate depends on the same weight and axle classes used for the vignette.

How the eight vehicle classes work

Romanian vehicles are split into eight classes. The split is based on whether the vehicle carries people or goods, on the gross vehicle weight, on the number of axles and on the number of seats. Picking the right class matters: a vignette bought for a lighter class is treated as invalid during a roadside check.

Passenger vehicles

Category APassenger car, also when towing a trailer
Category GVehicles with 9 to 23 seats (driver included)
Category HVehicles with more than 23 seats

Commercial vehicles

Category BCommercial vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight
Category CCommercial vehicles over 3.5 t up to 7.5 t gross weight
Category DCommercial vehicles with 2 axles, over 7.5 t up to 12 t
Category ECommercial vehicles with 2 to 3 axles from 12 t gross weight
Category FCommercial vehicles with 4 axles or more from 12 t gross weight

Validity periods you can choose

Passenger cars can be covered for 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 12 months. Vehicles above 3.5 t gross weight can choose between 1 day, 7 days, 30 days or 12 months. Not every class offers the daily option.

Validity is always counted in Romanian local time (EET/EEST), so a one-day vignette bought late in the evening still expires at the end of that Romanian calendar day. If your trip starts the next morning, select tomorrow as the start date in the next step.

What the price depends on

Two things decide the price: the class of your vehicle and the length of validity. Heavier goods classes cost several times more than a passenger car, and a 12-month vignette is by far the cheapest option per day if you cross Romania regularly. All prices you see in this checkout are shown in your own currency, converted at the current rate, and include our service fee.

Where you can buy it

A Romanian vignette can be bought at fuel stations near the border crossings, at some post offices, or online. Buying online before you leave means the plate is registered in advance, you avoid queues at the border, and you keep a proper e-mail receipt and invoice for your records. Your confirmation arrives by e-mail within minutes of paying.

Checks and fines

Validity is checked by fixed and mobile camera systems and by roadside patrols. Driving on a Romanian toll road without a valid vignette leads to a fine, and the penalty is issued per offence, so repeated passages can each be charged. Because the vignette is linked to your plate, there is nothing to display in the windscreen.

Changes, transfers and cancellations

A Romanian e-vignette cannot be transferred to another vehicle and normally cannot be cancelled once it is active. A mistyped plate can usually be corrected, and the start date can be moved as long as the vignette has not started yet. Add the Flex option at checkout and we handle changes or cancellation for you up to 24 hours before the start date.

Who is exempt

Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement in Romania. All other motor vehicles, including campervans and cars towing a caravan, need one.

Neighbouring countries with a toll

If your route continues past Romania, remember that these neighbours also charge for motorway use. You can add them to the same order, or read more on each country page:
