Where the Austrian vignette applies
Austria charges for the use of every motorway (“A” roads) and expressway (“S” roads). For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes the toll is paid with a vignette, and the digital version is linked to your license plate — there is no sticker to collect and nothing to display in the windscreen. Ordinary national and regional roads stay free of charge.
How the vehicle classes work
The price depends on the type of vehicle. Motorcycles pay the lowest rate, cars and camper vans up to 3.5 tonnes share the standard rate, and higher-bodied camper vans and minibuses are charged separately. Buying a vignette for a lighter class than your vehicle counts as driving without one during a check.

Validity periods you can choose
Austria offers a 1-day, 10-day, 2-month or annual vignette. The day, ten-day and two-month vignettes run from the start date you pick, while the annual one covers the toll year and stays valid until the end of January of the following year.
Validity is counted in Austrian local time (CET/CEST). If your trip starts the next morning, select tomorrow as the start date in the next step.
What the price depends on
Two things decide the price: your vehicle class and the length of validity. A ten-day vignette is only slightly more expensive than a single day, so it is usually the better choice for a round trip. All prices in this checkout are shown in your own currency, converted at the current rate, and include our service fee.
Tunnels and special toll sections
Some Alpine routes are tolled separately and are not covered by the vignette: among others the Brenner A13, the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels on the A10, the Arlberg tunnel on the S16, the Karawanks tunnel on the A11 towards Slovenia and the Pyhrn sections (Bosruck and Gleinalm) on the A9. Keep a card ready if your route uses them.
Where you can buy it
An Austrian vignette can be bought at fuel stations and kiosks close to the border, or online before you leave. Ordering online registers your plate in advance, lets you skip the queues, and gives you a proper e-mail receipt and invoice. Your confirmation arrives by e-mail within minutes of paying.
Checks and fines
Compliance is checked by camera gantries and by roadside patrols reading plates. Using an Austrian motorway without a valid vignette leads to a substitute toll on the spot, and a higher fine if it is not paid, charged per offence.
Changes, transfers and cancellations
A digital Austrian vignette is tied to one license plate and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. A mistyped plate can usually be corrected and the start date can be moved while the vignette has not started yet. Who is exempt
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not covered by the vignette at all — they pay a distance-based toll with an on-board unit. Emergency vehicles and vehicles of people with disabilities holding a valid Austrian exemption are also excluded.
