E-vignette (e-matrica) for travelers in Hungary
Tolls in Hungary are collected with a digital vignette that is linked to your license plate, so there is no sticker to collect and nothing to display in the windscreen. It is required on all motorways and several expressways, and can be bought for 1 day, 10 days, 1 month or a full year. Pick the category that matches your vehicle below; the price changes with the total weight and the number of seats. Confirmation is instant and your order is completed within 2 minutes.
Toll motorways in Hungary
In Hungary a vignette is required on all motorways (M roads) and on several expressways and main roads. Tolls are collected digitally: the vignette is linked to your license plate and checked by camera, so there is no sticker to collect and nothing to display in the windscreen.
Toll motorways
Ordinary main roads and streets inside towns are free, and short sections of some ring roads around Budapest are exempt as well.
County vignettes
Besides the national vignette, Hungary sells county vignettes (megyei matrica). Each one is valid for a full calendar year, but only on the motorway sections inside that single county. County vignettes make sense if you only cross one region regularly; for a holiday drive across the country the national vignette is almost always cheaper and simpler.
A national vignette covers every tolled section in all counties, which is what we sell here so you never have to work out which county a motorway junction belongs to.
Regulations for cars, campervans, buses and trailers
Hungary splits light vehicles into four categories. The category depends on the total weight and the number of seats, not on how the vehicle is used, and a trailer towed by a D2 vehicle needs its own U vignette.
Vehicle categories
Heavy vehicles
A car up to 3.5 tonnes towing a caravan stays in category D1 — only D2 vehicles need the separate trailer vignette.
Prices and validity periods
You can choose between the following validity periods:
- 1 day
- 10 days
- 1 month
- 1 year (motorcycles excluded)
The 10-day vignette is valid until midnight of the tenth day, the monthly one until the same day of the following month, and the annual one for a full calendar year. Prices in this checkout are shown in your own currency, converted at the current rate, and include our service fee.
Toll regulations for lorries
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not covered by the vignette. They pay a distance-based toll calculated from the kilometres driven, the number of axles and the emission class, declared in advance per route or measured with an on-board unit.
Sales points
Vignettes are sold at petrol stations, at post offices and at some border crossings. Ordering online before you leave registers your plate in advance, saves you the queue and gives you a proper e-mail receipt and invoice within minutes of paying.
Fines
Enforcement is fully automatic through fixed and mobile cameras. Driving without a valid vignette results in a penalty that rises sharply if it is not paid within 60 days, and it is issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle — including foreign-registered cars.
Transfers, plate changes and start date
A Hungarian vignette is linked to one license plate and one vehicle category and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. The registration number cannot be changed once the vignette has been issued.
The start of validity cannot be postponed after purchase. Pick the correct start date at checkout, or add the Flex option and we handle changes and cancellations for you up to 24 hours before the vignette becomes valid.
Which vehicles are exempt from the vignette
- Emergency, police, fire and military vehicles
- Vehicles over 3.5 t, which pay the distance-based toll instead
- Vehicles of disabled persons registered for a Hungarian exemption
- Public transport buses on scheduled services
