E-vignette (vinetka) for travelers in Bulgaria

Tolls in Bulgaria are collected with a fully digital vignette that is linked to your license plate, so there is no sticker to collect and nothing to display in the windscreen. It is required on every motorway and national road, and can be bought for 1 day, a weekend, 1 month, 3 months or a full year. Motorbikes are exempt. Pick the class that matches your vehicle below. Confirmation is instant and your order is completed within 2 minutes.

Toll roads in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria a vignette is required on all motorways and national roads. In short, every motor vehicle except motorbikes is subject to the vignette obligation. In 2019 Bulgaria phased out the adhesive sticker and replaced it with a fully digital vignette linked to the license plate.

Motorways

A1Trakia — Sofia to Burgas
A2Hemus — Sofia towards Varna
A3Struma — Sofia towards the Greek border
A4Maritsa — Chirpan to the Turkish border
A5Cherno More — Burgas to Varna
A6Europe — Sofia towards the Serbian border

National roads are also tolled. The road network covers roughly 3,000 kilometres of first-, second- and third-class national roads on top of the motorways, so in practice you need a vignette for almost every long-distance drive in the country. Streets inside towns and cities are free.

Regulations for different types of vehicles

The vignette is required for all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes total weight. Motorbikes are exempt and pay nothing at all. A trailer or caravan with a laden weight over 3.5 tonnes needs its own vignette in addition to the towing vehicle.

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes — lorries, coaches and heavy goods vehicles — are not covered by the vignette. They pay a distance-based toll calculated from the kilometres driven, the weight and the emission class.

Vehicles < 3.5 tCars, camper vans and minibuses up to 3.5 t total weight
TrailersTrailers and caravans over 3.5 t laden weight need their own vignette

Heavy vehicles

Over 3.5 tLorries and buses pay a distance-based toll instead of a vignette

Prices and validity periods

You can choose between the following validity periods:

  • 1 day (weekend vignette valid Friday to Sunday)
  • 7 days
  • 1 month
  • 3 months
  • 1 year

The annual vignette is valid for 12 months from the chosen start date. All shorter periods start on the date you select and run to midnight of the final day. Prices in this checkout are shown in your own currency, converted at the current rate, and include our service fee.

Total weight over 3.5 t

For vehicles above 3.5 tonnes the toll depends on the distance driven, the number of axles and the emission class, and it is settled through an on-board unit or a pre-declared route rather than a vignette. If you drive a mixed fleet, order the vignettes for your light vehicles here and keep the heavy vehicles on the distance-based toll.

Sales points

Vignettes are sold at border crossings, petrol stations and post offices inside Bulgaria. Ordering online before you leave registers your plate in advance, saves you the queue at the border and gives you a proper e-mail receipt and invoice within minutes of paying.

How do I enter special characters in the licence plate?

Bulgarian plates use Cyrillic letters that look like Latin ones. Always type your plate exactly as it appears on the vehicle, using Latin characters only, without spaces, dashes or country codes. Cyrillic letters that share a Latin shape (А, В, Е, К, М, Н, О, Р, С, Т, У, Х) should be typed as their Latin twin.

Diacritics from other countries (ä, ö, ü, å, ø, ř, ł) are entered without the accent, so ÄBC 123 becomes ABC123. Our system checks the plate before the order is submitted, so a mistyped plate is caught early.

Fines

Compliance is checked automatically by camera gantries along the motorway and national road network, so there is no need for roadside stops. Driving without a valid vignette leads to a fine that is several times the price of an annual vignette, and it is issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle.

Transfers, plate changes and start date

The vignette is linked to one license plate and cannot be transferred to another vehicle, and the registration number cannot be changed once the vignette has been issued.

The start of validity cannot be postponed after purchase either. Pick the correct start date at checkout, or add the Flex option and we handle changes and cancellations for you up to 24 hours before the vignette becomes valid.

Who is exempt from a vignette

Vignette-free use of the Bulgarian road network applies to:

  • Motorbikes and mopeds
  • Emergency, police, fire and military vehicles
  • Vehicles over 3.5 t, which pay the distance-based toll instead
  • Vehicles of disabled persons registered for an exemption in Bulgaria

If your route continues past Bulgaria, these neighbours also charge for motorway use. You can add them to the same order, or read more on each country page:
